Rugby legends

The term legend is perhaps over used but this week at Turf City the children of Tanglin Rugby Club were priveleged to be in the company of true rugby legends. Legends not just in their trophied history but also in the manner in which they interacted with the boys and responded with a smile to each request to autograph this or that memorabilia. Gareth Edwards, Sean Fitzpatrick, David Campese and Jonathan Davies merit the term simply for their achievements in the game but equally, and no less importantly, for the manner in which they enthused their young charges in two hours of drills. With no airs or graces these legends of the game arrived at Turf City and got stuck in. They encouraged the boys to simply enjoy the game, to concentrate and to deliver and receive a pass effectively. Their passion for the game was clear to see and the way in which they delivered their sessions spoke volumes for them and the game in which they achieved so much.

From the introduction by David Campese, through drills punctuated by the lilting Welsh voices of Edwards and Davies to Sean Fitzpatrick leading 150+ boys in a traditional Haka this was an afternoon to savour.

True legends walked the Turf City green on Wednesday and those that were priveleged to participate in the event will treasure the memory for many years and be hugely grateful to TRC, Chartis and Barclays, and of course the four men themselves for making it possible.
